Blitz Golf delivered another unforgettable chapter at the stunning Black Bull Golf Resort, Yarrawonga, with scorching conditions, a stacked field and a dramatic finish combining elite skill, fan engagement and pure entertainment.
Despite temperatures soaring to 44°C, the event recorded the highest attendance ever for a debut Blitz event, pushing total spectators for the series to over 10,000 across four events — a remarkable milestone that underlined Blitz Golf’s growing momentum.
The field showcased the unique DNA of Blitz Golf, blending superstar cricketers Glenn Maxwell and Dan Christian, Australian long-driving champion Mat Stubbs, leading golf influencers, men’s and women’s tour professionals, legends of the game, and everyday fans who earned their place through qualification. The result was a vibrant, diverse lineup that embodied the sport’s evolving appeal.
ROUND ONE: FAST STARTS AND FAN FAVOURITES
The opening round saw 24 players take on six holes, with scoring at a premium in the oppressive heat. Legends Tour player Chris Taylor, local favourite James Gordon, and fan qualifier David Cameron led the way at –2, setting the early benchmark. Also advancing were Maxwell, Christian, and influencer Joel Naburgs from Aussie Golf Lads, delighting the crowd with their competitive edge. Another favourite on the day, Zac Kelly advanced whilst playing in flip-flops!
The final spot was decided via a dramatic nearest-the-pin playoff, where James Gibellini edged out James Grierson and Caitlin Cotterill to move on.
ROUND TWO: PRESSURE MOUNTS
With scores reset, the remaining 12 players battled over three holes. Once again, Chris Taylor set the pace at –2, while Peter Wilson and James Gibellini advanced at –1.
Drama struck on the final hole when a bogey forced Whitney Hillier into a four-way NTP playoff alongside James Gordon, Tim Hart and Stacey Peters. With nerves of steel, Peters stepped up last and delivered a clutch dagger to claim the final spot in the sudden death final.
THE FINAL: A BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT
The final showdown on the Stadium Hole par 3 delivered theatre in spades. Peter Wilson and Stacey Peters made par, while Taylor’s pulled putt ended his run. Gibellini had a chance to win outright but narrowly missed, forcing a replay.
In the second attempt, Wilson and Gibellini again found par, while Peters was eliminated, setting up a sudden-death nearest-the-pin to decide the champion.
Gibellini struck a quality shot under immense pressure, but Wilson rose to the occasion. To the crowd’s delight, he punched his tee shot even closer — sealing victory in what was his fourth Blitz final in just seven appearances.
After falling short on multiple occasions, Peter Wilson finally claimed his maiden Blitz Golf victory, capping off a memorable day at Black Bull and reinforcing why Blitz Golf continues to captivate players and fans alike.
