EVENT TWO OF THE CADDYCOMPS BLITZ GOLF ENGLAND SERIES DELIVERS RECORD-BREAKING SCORING AND AN UNPRECEDENTED EIGHT-WAY PLAYOFF, AS AN INTERNATIONAL FIELD LIGHTS UP THE WEST MIDLANDS.
The CaddyComps Blitz Golf England Series went from strength to strength today, with the second event of the series drawing superb attendance for the second consecutive week following last week’s successful debut in Leeds. Staged at Gaudet Luce Golf Club in the West Midlands, the event showcased a truly international field, with a strong contingent of professionals from Australia, England, South Africa and Scotland lining up alongside celebrities and influencers.
ROUND 1: THE SIX-HOLE BLITZ
Daniel Gale signalled his intent from the outset, storming to the top of the leaderboard at four under par in the opening six-hole blitz. Jordan Wrisdale was the closest challenger at two under, with South Africa’s MJ Viljoen and Scotland’s Grieg Hutcheon rounding out the top four.
The cut line settled at two over par, forcing six players into a nearest-the-pin (NTP) shootout for the final two spots in Round 2. OJ Farrell and Michele Forgione held their nerve to advance — at the expense of previous Blitz Golf winner Matias Sanchez, cricketer D’Arcy Short, Hannah Bowen and Owen Meeds.
ROUND 2: THE THREE-HOLE BLITZ
With the pressure intensifying in the three-hole blitz, it was again Daniel Gale who rose to the occasion. He carded three under through the three holes to reach a staggering seven under across the first two rounds — a new Blitz Golf record, and an absolutely insane run of scoring. Jack Bidmead also booked his place in the final with a two-under effort.
A record eight-way playoff was then required to decide the last two qualifying spots, with OJ Farrell once again surviving the NTP, joined by Jordan Wrisdale.
THE FINAL: ONE HOLE ON THE STADIUM HOLE
The single-hole final on the Stadium Hole produced extraordinary theatre. Daniel Gale struck his tee shot to around 15 feet, leaving a slightly downhill putt. After Jordan Wrisdale, OJ Farrell and Jack Bidmead all missed, Gale stepped up for the win but left his putt short. Wrisdale then missed his short putt to be eliminated, sending Gale, Bidmead and Farrell back to the tee for a replay.
In the replay, Gale again had the box seat. Farrell holed an excellent 12-foot putt to save par and Bidmead secured his par, before Gale faced a nine-footer to win — only to see it slide past the hole. With nothing to separate them, the title would come down to a nearest-the-pin decider.
Farrell, who had survived cut after cut all day and just drained a clutch putt, was first to play — and fired his chip to just two feet. Bidmead then went long, leaving Gale a chance to claim victory for an Aussie on English soil. His shot was excellent, but finished just a touch further out than Farrell’s, and OJ Farrell celebrated a thoroughly earned win. For Gale, it was back- to-back finals appearances to go with his record-breaking scoring.
